Radioactive Ore Drum Loaders

One of our most interesting and challenging jobs for a while. The customer needed to load radioactive ore into a chamber that is located at the bottom of a column.

The major challenge that needed to be addressed; the bottom had to be hinged to open remotely – meaning from the top of the column when the drum is at the bottom of the chute – very challenging especially when it needed to be in stainless steel.

The solution was 2 off special spring loaded latches that were openable via a wire rip cord that latched the 2 off half hinged lids on the bottom of the drum, the lids were stiffened to take the weight and the centre hinge member was formed on top so as not to retain product. The lids were then also fitted with lynch pins to avoid accidental opening – to be removed just before lowering down inside the column

The rip cord and sheath needed to be protected so cover plates were fitted.

The titanium column couldn’t be scratched so plastic strips screwed with countersunk screws were fitted to 2 off external bumper rings.

The lids were fabricated from polycarbonate and secured with over-centre toggle latches.

Stainless radioactive ore drum loaders manufactured with pride and care in our Minto workshop.
